Everything you need to know to get up and racing

Getting started in motorcycle road racing can be daunting with many challenges to work through just to get on the grid. In the Carl Cox Motorsport Cup we can help you through all stages from joining the AMCC, getting a race licence, finding a bike and support in the build up and during race day. We can even buddy you up with an experienced Cup Campaigner on the day if you choose.

Register for a MNZ and club licence

You only need a MNZ Club licence which is easily obtained after you have joined the Auckland Motorcycle Club or any affiliated MNZ club.

Register as a Cup Competitor

To enter the Cup you must first register for our Championship. There is a $250 one-off registration fee which gets you a place on the Cup grid, better yet, it is free if you are under 19 at the date of the first round. Please note this is NOT your individual event entry fee, that is paid separately direct to MX Timing and the organising Club on a round by round basis. Before round 1 of racing we have a “CUP Launch” night where we get together for some refreshments and pizza and all competitors get a Cup Pack which contains a T shirt, our compulsory sponsor stickers, poster and usually some goodies from a sponsor or two. It’s a great time to share some banter about who’s going to kick who’s arse this season.

Grab a bike

There are many Hyosung 250’s out there for sale and it can best to find a good pre loved race bike as most of the work is done with bike prep and expense.

Used race bikes can be found from about $1,200. You can of course start with a road bike or insurance write off. There is plenty of help and advice to get you started with your race bike build.

The Ninja 400 requires more funding but still very reasonable cost when compared to other race classes. You may find a used Cup bike in the market place from about $7,000 or again buy a road bike and start your build.

Check our shop page for ready-to-go Hyosung and Ninja Cup bikes.

Be sure to check our Cup rules (pdf below) when preparing your race bike and check carefully any bike you purchase that it complies with our rules, it is your responsibility.

All parts to build your Cup bikes are available through Ken at discounted prices and we also have access to some discounted high quality riding gear, like Xlite helmets, Spidi gloves and Stylmartin boots.

Cup Mentors & Training

Over the past 11 seasons of Cup racing we have had a few training days with experienced racers who have competed in the Cup and gone onto faster classes and International careers in road racing. Avalon Biddle, Daniel Mettam and Connor London have all given time to support the Cup and its racers with advice around riding skills, race craft and race preparation of the bike and body.

Cup Mentors

For our 2022/23 season we are making this a new feature of the Cup with a more "new rider focus" covering all aspects of preparation, process on race day and racing skills. A team of experienced Cup Racers will be led by Chris Smith, himself a Ninja Cup Champion and professional rider trainer with a huge CV in the motorcycle world.

The Mentor Team comprises Chris Smith, Alex Butson, Kendal Dunlop, Sean White and Benny Cook.

These long time Cup Campaigners will be offering mentorship to all first and second season Cup racers. You can be buddied up and pit with them on race day, soak up their experience and ask them all the silly questions you want. Be guided through sign on, helmet check, licence and machine examination requirements, even how to read a grid sheet to ensure you are in the correct starting spot.

Chris won't be competing himself this season so he can help you with mechanical advice and also watch your form on track and assist with body position, corner entry, lines and general advice on improving your lap times and staying as safe as possible.

All adding to a better experience of road racing.

When you register for the Cup season online through this website we will allocate a Mentor for you and put you in touch.

Race Day

A typical Race Day for the Cup is a practice/qualifying in the morning and this 2020 season we will have four races during the day including 3 grid start and our legendary Le Mans start race. Racing is always followed by our round prize giving, BBQ and refreshments which we provide. Loads of story’s spill out of the days dramas during our get together, always fun. Always popular is our annual excursion to the mighty Bruce Mclaren Motorsport Park at Taupo, usually in February. This is a great weekend where we have 3 sprint races and our 1 Hour Endurance for double points.
